Jul 31, Becky rated it really liked it. It is often, wrongly, thought that wrestling in prayer means wrestling with God until he yields up what it is that we seek. Still, worth working through.
This book is a classic on the subject and should be read before other secondary sources are approached. If we fail to do this, our prayer life will either die from discouragement and despair or become simply a duty which we feel we must perform. Beyond all that, it will simply hallessby your soul with goodness and love of God.
But if they are to be hallewby any benefit to us, we must, in the first place, be truthful and not begin to practice deception, that is, excuse and defend our slovenly prayer life. It is not our prayer which draws Jesus into our hearts. That would’ve been a shame. How can prayer, being weak, accomplish great things?
Prayer is an invitation for Jesus to sup with you as he already desires to do. We can come into His presence and rest peayer weary souls in quiet contemplation of Him.

I learn something new in almost every book, which shows us that prayer is a deep, highly individual topic and one can never claim to fully understand or to perfectly carry out the prayers of a warrior.
But it was also “theologically loose. To pray is nothing more involved than to let Jesus into our needs, and permitting Him to exercise His own power in dealing with them.

The author compiles his thoughts into 11 different chapters. Even though Hallesby writes from two centuries ago, his clear, thoughtful insights on prayer are both concise small bookyet exhaustive. It is important, however, to note that it is clear that he is not reformed.
If I were to continue to pray in words, I would have to repeat what I have already said. As a conservative pietist, he has some theological positions out of sync with confessional Presbyterianism, evident at points where he treats predestination, the extent of the atonement, and like issues.
