The present is what hhe are, and that is what counts. Baggini’s work here crafting and defending his idea of the self is well scouted, informative, and believable. The author takes a philosophical approach rather than a neuroscience view that a lot of recent books have taken. Conversely the major shortcoming is perhaps Baggini’s tendency to lash baggni against religions, philosophers, schools of thought and the like with such vehemence as to be distracting.

I picked up the book because I was feeling a sense of discontinuity with my self, so this experience made me smile. This excellent book helps explain why, and other reviewers go into the specifics of the subjects described therein. We are not the same person in old age as we were in middle age, as young bagguni, and when we were born. Write a customer review.

Wondering if I could possibly be the only person thinking this much on the concept of self in modern society, I saw this book and thought it looked interesting and on the topic that was filling my mind.
To take the Cartesian line is to make an elementary category mistake: This is a very difficult subject and one that I struggle with but after having read this book I certainly feel more informed if not satisfied.
